We are excited to welcome two confirmed facilitators to the 6th Annual Donors & Doers: Teen Takeover Edition:

💡 Rasheda Williams of Inspired Life Professionals will lead “Future Funded: Unlocking 21st Century Tools to Fuel Social Impact Dreams.” Participants will explore how AI and other tools can help uncover grants, scholarships, fellowships, pitch competitions, awards, and other opportunities to turn ideas into action.

🎤 Karly Spicer Moore, Founder and Executive Director of SHARE Detroit, will lead “You Don’t Have to Know Everything: Becoming a Trusted Community Connector.” Her interactive workshop will help participants learn how to identify needs, find credible community resources, and make stronger connections between people and organizations.

And we are not finished building the lineup.

This is the Teen Takeover Edition, which means young people should not only be sitting in the audience. We want them helping lead the experience!

Metro Detroit youth still have time to pitch an idea for a session, performance, demonstration, conversation, creative experience, tech activity, financial education experience, or something we have not even thought of yet.

You do not have to be a professional speaker. You just need an idea you believe other young people should experience.

MFCF is honored to recognize Cheryl P. Johnson, CEO of the Coalition on Temporary Shelter, as the recipient of the 2026 DTE Community Champion Award.

Established in 2022, the award was created in honor of DTE Corporation’s outstanding commitment to supporting diversity and helping MFCF strengthen its strategic planning and organizational vision.

Since its establishment, the DTE Community Champion Award has recognized leaders and institutions whose service, generosity, partnership, and investment have strengthened MFCF and the communities we serve.

It’s Spirit Week!

DiscoverWorks is in full motion at Aya House, and our students are continuing to show us what is possible when young people are given space to learn, lead, create, and belong.

On Monday, MFCF and Aya House founder TeQuion Driscoll led an interactive entrepreneurship workshop where students created business and nonprofit ideas, learned how pricing, expenses, revenue, and profit margins work, and practiced presenting their ideas with confidence. It was powerful to watch students become more comfortable speaking in front of others. Even students who were not yet interested in entrepreneurship 😴😴spent time exploring what they hope to do when they grow up, including the colleges they want to attend and the career paths they may pursue.

Today, Aya House member Jerjuan Howard will join us to engage and inspire our students. Then, Trice Clark of Kraftologie will lead a hands-on arts and crafts experience, Dr. Tameka Arnold will return tomorrow for another social-emotional learning workshop, and on Friday, students will take their first DiscoverWorks field trip to Mama Akua House, where Dr. Yusef Bunchy Shakur will guide them through Black history, activism, and community leadership!

This week also marked the final day for our Site Coordinator and Aya House member Myla Chapman, who is heading to Atlanta to pursue her doctorate in social work. Before leaving, Myla made sure to pour into our students and pass along some of her wisdom. As a result, several students are now serving as kitchen managers, helping select the daily menu and serve their peers. Apparently, the campers have also reached a very important leadership consensus: they cannot get enough chicken.

We also are now partnering with HopSkipDrive, providing families with a more structured youth transportation!

Rising 8th - 10th graders are welcome to enroll onsite. DiscoverWorks is more than a summer camp. It is a place where young people are reminded that their ideas have value, their voices belong in the room, and they have the power to shape their own futures and their communities. The Detroit Love Fund Live Philanthropy Experience returns during the 6th Annual Donors & Doers Summit on Saturday, August 29.

This is not a traditional grant announcement where decisions are made behind closed doors. It is a live, community-led philanthropy workshop where everyday residents learn how grantmaking works, review real community ideas, discuss local priorities, and help decide who receives funding in real time.

At our first Detroit Love Fund activation during the Juneteenth Freedom Festival:

❤️ 43 residents participated in the grant review process
❤️ 13 youth served as reviewers and funding decision-makers
❤️ The community considered 19 requests for support
❤️ Detroit middle school teacher Ms. Joyce M. received the first $313 microgrant to purchase hygiene supplies for girls in her classroom
❤️ The grant was selected and awarded in less than one hour

That first experience showed what becomes possible when communities are trusted to direct resources based on their lived knowledge, relationships, and understanding of what their neighbors need.

Now, we are doing it again.

During Donors & Doers, youth will once again sit alongside adults as philanthropists. They will learn the language of giving, review community-driven requests, share their perspectives, and help decide where the next Detroit Love Fund grant goes.

Because young people should not have to wait until adulthood to practice leadership, generosity, and collective decision-making.

Six years ago, Donors & Doers started as an idea: bring the people funding change into the same room as the people doing the work.

Since then, this gathering has traveled from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Washington, D.C., and now returns to Detroit for the fourth time.

Before we fully introduce this year’s theme, we are taking a moment to honor the rooms, relationships, lessons, speakers, funders, founders, families, and community leaders who built Donors & Doers with us.

Over the next several weeks, we will be opening the archives and sharing clips from past years because this sixth anniversary is not only about where we are going.

It is about every person who helped us get here.

And now, we are preparing for our biggest chapter yet.

The 6th Annual Donors & Doers returns to Aya House on August 28-29, 2026, bringing together rising changemakers, nonprofit leaders, funders, entrepreneurs, families, creatives, resource navigators, and everyday residents ready to learn, connect, and move resources closer to community.

This year’s experience will also feature the Detroit Love Fund philanthropy workshop and live grant giveaway, where attendees will learn how participatory philanthropy works, review community-driven ideas, and help decide where funding goes in real time.

* Daily meals and snacks
* Financial literacy and leadership development
* STEM, enrichment, recreation, and field trips
* Social-emotional learning and conflict-resolution support
* Transportation assistance for eligible families
* A safe, engaging space to learn, build friendships, and grow

Enrollment is open this week only, and space is limited.

“Why is MFCF running a summer youth program?”

Our answer is simple: we’re not building another program. We’re building a model.

MFCF was created to strengthen the social infrastructure already serving our communities—the people, organizations, businesses, and relationships that make neighborhoods stronger.

That’s exactly what DiscoverWorks is.

Rather than creating something entirely new, we brought an existing program to Aya House and activated it through the incredible ecosystem already surrounding us.

Aya House members.
Community organizations.
Educators.
Youth leaders.
Facilitators.
Small businesses.
Vendors.
Families.

Together, they’re making this program possible.

But we’re doing something else at the same time…

We’re documenting everything.

Every supply list.
Every staffing plan.
Every communication template.
Every transportation strategy.
Every safety procedure.
Every lesson learned.
Every mistake.
Every improvement.

Because our goal isn’t to become the organization that runs every youth program.

Our goal is to create a framework that other communities can use, improve, and make their own.

We’re learning in public.

We’re course-correcting in real time.

And we’re making sure the next organization doesn’t have to start from scratch.

That’s what we believe building community infrastructure looks like.

Not replacing what’s already working.

Connecting it. Strengthening it. Sharing it.

Because our goal isn’t to become the organization that runs every youth program.

Our goal is to create a framework that other communities can use, improve, and make their own.

We’re learning in public.

And we’re making sure the next organization doesn’t have to start from scratch.

Yesterday we found our students voluntarily organizing a rap battle between teams they created themselves. 🎤😂

That moment wasn’t on the schedule.

It happened because they finally feel comfortable enough to be themselves.

Huge shoutout to Hollie Thomas, our Recreation Facilitator, for creating an environment where fun, connection, and identity are just as important as academics. Hollie joined us through the @blackbizalliance Up Next Internship Program, and she’s already making a lasting impact on our students while market testing her own business idea (more on that soon).

While the students are discovering their confidence, we’re continuing to strengthen the program behind the scenes. We’re still working through transportation challenges because we believe getting to opportunity should never be the barrier to accessing it.

Yesterday reminded us that changing a young person’s future starts long before the classroom.

Before the first lesson even began, our incredible youth leaders spent three hours calling families, troubleshooting transportation challenges, and making sure every student who wanted to be at DiscoverWorks had every opportunity to get here. Transportation should never be the reason a young person misses out on opportunity, and we’re committed to removing that barrier. As the program continues, we’re actively seeking additional support to strengthen our transportation fund and expand access for more families.

Once everyone arrived, the learning began.

Our students practiced emergency evacuation procedures, built community with one another, and 40 future leaders became Conflict Resolution Certified after working through real-world scenarios that today’s community leaders face. They didn’t just learn how to solve disagreements—they learned how to listen, negotiate, build consensus, and lead with empathy.

To top it all off, Detroit Smoothie Truck surprised our youth and families with complimentary smoothies during pickup, creating the perfect ending to an unforgettable first day. Thank you for helping us celebrate our students in such a meaningful way! 🥤

Announcing a major milestone for MFCF!

MFCF has received a historic philanthropic investment of $200,000 to launch the 2026 Summer Discovery program, a six-week summer learning experience designed for 100 rising 8th–10th grade teens from Metro Detroit at Aya House in Detroit’s Eastern Market.

In 2019, MFCF was founded to create a pipeline and Black and Brown nonprofit practitioners. This inaugural program at Aya House is designed to strengthen Detroit's pipeline of the youth changemakers by combining academic instruction, digital skill-building, financial education, and leadership development with exposure to entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, and community innovators.

This investment reflects growing confidence in the role community-rooted intermediaries can play in connecting philanthropic capital with local leadership and opportunity.

MFCF is also actively recruiting volunteers, vendors, and partners who want to help shape a powerful summer experience for Detroit youth. Enrollment for the free program opens March 9th and we're hosting info sessions for interested families, partners and volunteers.
